Head to head: Pete Sampras and Federer

With Roger Federer needing only two more Grand Slam titles to equal Pete Sampras’ all-time record of 14, the comparison between the players, both aged 26 years and four months, reveals many similarities at the same stage in their careers.
At the end of 2007, Federer has won 80.4 per cent of all career matches; Sampras managing 78.8 per cent by the close of 1997. Federer has also won one career title more than Sampras, although the American has a superior success rate in finals played. Neither player has won the French Open.
