Halle Final

By Gerry Weber Open Official Site

R. FEDERER/M. Fish 6-0, 6-3

An interview with: ROGER FEDERER

It seemed to be very easy for you today. Is that impression right?

Yes. When you see the result, 6:0 in the first, it was in fact very easy. It also comes like a surprise when things go completely without any problems. But it’s also a bit tricky, because the crowd starts to go ahead with the opponent. They want to see more tennis, tiebreak matches or third sets. They support the guy that is behind. I think the people here really enjoy watching me, but they want to see me longer. I had to stay concentrated and to take my chances in the second. It’s important to continue playing solid tennis, and I’m very happy that I was able to do that the whole week. I had a lot of fun here, this was the best preparation for Wimbledon. But also this tournament means a lot to me. I’m proud having defended the title.

What kind of surprise you mean?

Well, you’re always nervous when you wake up and have to play the final. Then the first set runs 6:0, this is insane. Usually you only hope to have a good start. Now I’m really relaxed having had that good start in the grass season again. I will take some days off and enjoy this start. Afterwards I’ll be able to attack again in Wimbledon.

What means that to your preparation in Wimbledon?

This week was quite a better preparation for me compared with last year. Im simply played better. I’ll travel now on Tuesday to London, so there will be enough time for preparation there, that’s important. I hope not to fail already in round one like Hewitt. There is really a lot pressure on me, also from my side, too. But my play is really good already, if I’m able to continue playing this level, there won’t be many chances to beat me. I really hope to confirm my performances last year.

Are you going to defend your title next year again?

I thought about changing something before having won the title last year. But there was no reason for me not coming back after the triumph last year. And usually I defend my titles, so I think I'll be back. This is a great tournament. I’m feeling like being at home here. My friends, my family were here for the final. And I drove with my car to Halle. From time to time that’s quite a nice alternative to other tournaments.

How are you celebrating this title?

I’m not the guy who’s able to teach anybody how to celebrate victories. Perhaps I should improve this. I should enjoy my wins more, but I will have to drive home the next five hours. Actually there is not much time for celebrating.
