Hamburg AMS Second Round

By Hamburg Masters Official Site

Press Conference with ROGER FEDERER

Federer – Lapentti 6:3, 6:3

Q: Today it wasn’t as much work as it was yesterday.

FEDERER: Yes, more or less so. I just saw the statistics, I didn’t have to fend off any breakball today. Therefore my service worked well. Especially the beginning of the games went well and that was important today, because I knew I would definitely have my chances on his serve. That worked well today. But I saw during practice that he got better lately. His back hand and his serve. We practiced for two hours on Saturday. I was curious how it would go during the match because I lost during practice.

Q: But overall you were more confident today.

FEDERER: Yes. I tried straight after the first set to make a difference. I couldn’t do that in the second set against Gaudio. That mustn’t happen again. I could change that today and I’m very happy with the way it went today. I could make less mistakes. That is my goal for tomorrow.

Q: How do you look at it against Gonzalez?

FEDERER: We only played each other once, in Indian Wells. I won rather easily. But now it’s on clay. That’s different. It’s funny we only played each other once, because we played the whole juniors together, I was number 1 and he was number 3 and we never played each other. Therefore it’s quite exciting to play against someone as young as me.

Q: What will you have to consider?

FEDERER: His forehand, for sure. That’s his best shot. He takes a lot of risk and he hits the ball extremely hard. I got to know that in Indian Wells, but I could break his rhythm there after a while and I could use my own forehand to win the points. I have to vary my game well tomorrow, that will be important.
